| 1And I lifted my eyes, and I saw-and behold!-four horns. |
|
אוָֽאֶשָּׂ֥א אֶת־עֵינַ֖י וָאֵ֑רֶא וְהִנֵּ֖ה אַרְבַּ֥ע קְרָנֽוֹת: |
| 2And I said to the angel who was speaking to me, "What are these?" And he said to me, "These are the horns that scattered Judah and Israel and Jerusalem." |
|
בוָֽאֹמַ֕ר אֶל־הַמַּלְאָ֛ךְ הַדֹּבֵ֥ר בִּ֖י מָה־אֵ֑לֶּה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י אֵ֚לֶּה הַקְּרָנוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר זֵר֣וּ אֶת־יְהוּדָ֔ה אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וִירֽוּשָׁלִָֽם: |
| These are the horns: These are the nations in the four corners of the heavens that gored Judah and Jerusalem with their horns until they scattered them. |
|
אלה הקרנות:
אלה העכו"ם אשר בארבע רוחות השמים אשר נגחו בקרניהם את יהודה וירושלים עד אשר זירום:

| 3And the Lord showed me four craftsmen. |
|
גוַיַּרְאֵ֣נִי יְהֹוָ֔ה אַרְבָּעָ֖ה חָֽרָשִֽׁים: |
| four craftsmen: Carpenters who know how to saw the horns. And our Rabbis explained in tractate Sukkah (52b) who they are. |
|
ארבעה חרשים:
נגרים היודעים לנסר את הקרנות ורבותינו פירשו במסכת סוכה מי הם:
|
| 4And I said, "What are these coming to do?" And he said, saying, "These are the horns that scattered Judah to the extent that no man raised his head. And these came to cause them to quake, to cast away the horns of the nations that bear a horn against the land of Judah, to scatter it." |

דוָֽאֹמַ֕ר מָ֛ה אֵ֥לֶּה בָאִ֖ים לַֽעֲשׂ֑וֹת וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לֵאמֹ֗ר אֵ֣לֶּה הַקְּרָנ֞וֹת אֲשֶׁר־זֵ֣רוּ אֶת־יְהוּדָ֗ה כְּפִי־אִישׁ֙ לֹֽא־נָשָׂ֣א רֹאשׁ֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֚אוּ אֵ֙לֶּה֙ לְהַֽחֲרִ֣יד אֹתָ֔ם לְיַדּ֞וֹת אֶת־קַרְנ֣וֹת הַגּוֹיִ֗ם הַנֹּֽשְׂאִ֥ים קֶ֛רֶן אֶל־אֶ֥רֶץ יְהוּדָ֖ה לְזָרֽוֹתָֽהּ: |
| And he said, saying, “These are the horns”: that you first saw. |
|
ואומר מה:
אלה הקרנות אשר ראיתי בראשונה:
|
| that scattered Judah: and humbled them to the extent that no man lifted his head, and they did not allow anyone of My people to raise his head. |
|
אשר זרו את יהודה :
והשפילום עד כפי איש לא נשא ראשו ולא נתנו לאחד מבני עמי להרים ראש:
|
| And these came: These craftsmen came to cause those horns to quake and to cast them away. |
|
ויבאו אלה:
החרשים להחריד אותן הקרנות ולידות אותן:

| 5And I lifted my eyes, and I saw-and behold!-a man with a measuring line in his hand. |
|
הוָֽאֶשָּׂ֥א עֵינַ֛י וָאֵ֖רֶא וְהִנֵּה־אִ֑ישׁ וּבְיָד֖וֹ חֶ֥בֶל מִדָּֽה: |
| a measuring line: A measuring line to measure Jerusalem, how much its length and its breadth shall be. |
|
חבל מדה:
חוט המדה למדוד את ירושלים כמה יהיה ארכה ורחבה:
|
| 6And I said, "Where are you going?" And he said to me, "To measure Jerusalem, to see how much is its breadth and how much [is] its length." |
|
ווָֽאֹמַ֕ר אָ֖נָה אַתָּ֣ה הֹלֵ֑ךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֗י לָמֹד֙ אֶת־יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם לִרְא֥וֹת כַּמָּֽה־רָחְבָּ֖הּ וְכַמָּ֥ה אָרְכָּֽהּ: |
| 7And behold, the angel who was speaking with me was coming forth, and another angel was coming forth toward him. |
|
זוְהִנֵּ֗ה הַמַּלְאָ֛ךְ הַדֹּבֵ֥ר בִּ֖י יֹצֵ֑א וּמַלְאָ֣ךְ אַחֵ֔ר יֹצֵ֖א לִקְרָאתֽוֹ: |
| And behold, the angel who was speaking with me was coming forth: He is the one with the measuring line in his hand. |
|
והנה המלאך הדובר בי יוצא:
הוא אשר בידו חבל המדה:
|
| 8And he said to him, "Run, speak to this young man, saying: 'Jerusalem shall be inhabited like unwalled towns, because of the multitude of men and cattle therein.' " |
|
חוַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו (כתיב אֵלָ֔ו) רֻ֗ץ דַּבֵּ֛ר אֶל־הַנַּ֥עַר הַלָּ֖ז לֵאמֹ֑ר פְּרָזוֹת֙ תֵּשֵׁ֣ב יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם מֵרֹ֥ב אָדָ֛ם וּבְהֵמָ֖ה בְּתוֹכָֽהּ: |
| Run, speak to this young man: You shall no longer go forth to measure, for the Holy One, blessed be He, has taken counsel with His heavenly household [and decreed] that [Jerusalem] will not have a limit or a measure. And now, run and speak to Zechariah: It shall be inhabited like unwalled towns, without a wall, so that all who come there shall settle therein, and it shall grow from day to day. |
|
רוץ דבר אל הנער:
אל תצא עוד למוד כי נמלך הקב"ה בפמליא שלו שלא יהא לה קצב ושיעור ועתה רוץ דבר אל זכריה לאמר פרזות תשב. מאין חומה כדי שיתישבו בה כל הבא ותגדל מיום אל יום:

| 9But I will be for it-says the Lord-a wall of fire around, and for glory I will be in its midst. |
|
טוַֽאֲנִ֚י אֶֽהְיֶה־לָּהּ֙ נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֔ה ח֥וֹמַת אֵ֖שׁ סָבִ֑יב וּלְכָב֖וֹד אֶהְיֶ֥ה בְתוֹכָֽהּ: |
| But I will be for it: as a shield, as though a wall of fire surrounds it. Also, My Shechinah shall dwell in its midst for your glory. |
|
ואני אהיה לה:
למגן כאילו חומת אש סביב לה וגם בתוכה תשכון שכינתי לכבודכם:
|
| 10Ho, ho! Flee from the land of the north, says the Lord; for I have spread you as the four corners of the heavens, says the Lord. |
|
יה֣וֹי ה֗וֹי וְנֻ֛סוּ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ צָפ֖וֹן נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה כִּ֠י כְּאַרְבַּ֞ע רוּח֧וֹת הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם פֵּרַ֥שְׂתִּי אֶתְכֶ֖ם נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה: |
| Ho, Ho!: “Ho” is only an expression of proclamation and an announcement of assembly. And so did Jonathan render it: Announce to the scattered ones. אַכְלוּ means announce, as in (II Sam. 22:14): “The Lord thundered from heaven,” which Jonathan renders: אַכְלוּ מִן שְׁמַיַּא |

הוי הוי:
אין הוי אלא לשון הכרזה והזעקת קיבוץ וכן ת"י אכלו למבדריא הכריזו כמו (שמואל ב כ״ב:י״ד) ירעם מן שמים, אכלו מן שמיא:
|
| Flee from the land of the north: The exiles of My people, [flee] from within Babylon and Assyria. |
|
ונוסו מארץ:
צאו גליות עמי מתוך בבל ואשור:
|
| 11Ho, Zion! Flee, she who sits among the nation of Babylon. |
|
יאה֥וֹי צִיּ֖וֹן הִמָּֽלְטִ֑י יוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת בַּת־בָּבֶֽל: |
| Ho, Zion ! Flee: This too is an expression of announcement: Assemble, O exile of Zion, and flee from the midst of Babylon. |
|
הוי ציון המלטי:
אף זה ל' הכרזה האספו עם גלות ציון והמלטו מתוך בבל:
|
| 12For so said the Lord of Hosts: After glory, He sent me to the nations that plunder you, for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye. |
|
יבכִּ֣י כֹ֣ה אָמַר֘ יְהֹוָ֣ה צְבָאוֹת֒ אַחַ֣ר כָּב֔וֹד שְׁלָחַ֕נִי אֶל־הַגּוֹיִ֖ם הַשֹּֽׁלְלִ֣ים אֶתְכֶ֑ם כִּי הַנֹּגֵ֣עַ בָּכֶ֔ם נֹגֵ֖עַ בְּבָבַ֥ת עֵינֽוֹ: |
| After glory: After your glory I am sent, to magnify your glory. And the Midrash Aggadah (Addendum to Tan. Buber, Devarim 4) states: After the honor - After I pay Esau for the honor that he bestowed upon his father. |
|
אחר כבוד:
אחר כבודכם אני שלוח להגדיל לכם כבוד ומדרש אגדה אחר כבוד אחר שאשלם לעשו כבוד שכיבד את אביו:

| 13For, behold! I raise My hand over them, and they shall be prey for those who serve them. And you shall know that the Lord of Hosts sent me. |
|
יגכִּ֠י הִֽנְנִ֨י מֵנִ֚יף אֶת־יָדִי֙ עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וְהָ֥יוּ שָׁלָ֖ל לְעַבְדֵיהֶ֑ם וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּֽי־יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁלָחָֽנִי: |
| and they shall be prey, etc.,: to Israel, who are now slaves to them. |
|
והיו שלל לעבדיהם:
לישראל שהם עתה עבדים להן:
|
| 14Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for, behold! I will come and dwell in your midst, says the Lord. |
|
ידרָנִּ֥י וְשִׂמְחִ֖י בַּת־צִיּ֑וֹן כִּ֧י הִֽנְנִי־בָ֛א וְשָֽׁכַנְתִּ֥י בְתוֹכֵ֖ךְ נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה: |
| 15And many nations shall join the Lord on that day, and they shall be My people; and I will dwell in your midst and you shall know that the Lord of Hosts sent me to you. |
|
טווְנִלְווּ֩ גוֹיִ֨ם רַבִּ֚ים אֶל־יְהֹוָה֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא וְהָ֥יוּ לִ֖י לְעָ֑ם וְשָׁכַנְתִּ֣י בְתוֹכֵ֔ךְ וְיָדַ֕עַתְּ כִּי־יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁלָחַ֥נִי אֵלָֽיִךְ: |
| And many nations shall join: shall join. |
|
ונלוו:
ונתחברו:
|
| 16And the Lord shall inherit Judah as His share on the Holy Land, and He shall again choose Jerusalem. |
|
טזוְנָחַ֨ל יְהֹוָ֚ה אֶת־יְהוּדָה֙ חֶלְק֔וֹ עַ֖ל אַדְמַ֣ת הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ וּבָחַ֥ר ע֖וֹד בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָֽם: |
| And the Lord shall inherit Judah: as His inheritance and His share. |
|
ונחל ה' את יהודה:
לנחלתו ולחלקו:
|
| 17Silence all flesh from before the Lord, for He is aroused out of His holy habitation. |
|
יזהַ֥ס כָּל בָּשָׂ֖ר מִפְּנֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה כִּ֥י נֵע֖וֹר מִמְּע֥וֹן קָדְשֽׁוֹ: |
| Silence all flesh: All the rest of the nations. |
|
הס כל בשר:
כל שאר העכו"ם:
|
| for He is aroused: An expression [denoting] arousal and awakening. |
|
כי נעור:
ל' הערה והקצה:
