| 1And David said to himself, "Now, I shall perish one day in the hand of Saul; there is nothing better for me than that I shall escape to the land of the Philistines, and Saul will despair of me, to seek me any more in all the border of Israel, and I shall escape from his hand. " |

| Now, I shall perish one day: Perhaps he will ambush me and come upon me suddenly. |

| 2And David arose. And he and the six hundred men who were with him, crossed over to Achish the son of Maoch, the king of Gath. |
|
בוַיָּ֣קָם דָּוִ֔ד וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר ה֔וּא וְשֵׁשׁ־מֵא֥וֹת אִ֖ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִמּ֑וֹ אֶל־אָכִ֥ישׁ בֶּן־מָע֖וֹךְ מֶ֥לֶךְ גַּֽת: |
| 3And David dwelt with Achish in Gath, he and his men, each man and his household, David and his two wives; Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the wife of Nabal, the Carmelitess. |

גוַיֵּשֶׁב֩ דָּוִ֨ד עִם־אָכִ֥ישׁ בְּגַ֛ת ה֥וּא וַאֲנָשָׁ֖יו אִ֣ישׁ וּבֵית֑וֹ דָּוִד֙ וּשְׁתֵּ֣י נָשָׁ֔יו אֲחִינֹ֙עַם֙ הַיִּזְרְעֵאלִ֔ית וַאֲבִיגַ֥יִל אֵֽשֶׁת־נָבָ֖ל הַֽכַּרְמְלִֽית: |
| 4And it was told to Saul that David had fled to Gath, and he did not continue to search for him. |

דוַיֻּגַּ֣ד לְשָׁא֔וּל כִּֽי־בָרַ֥ח דָּוִ֖ד גַּ֑ת וְלֹֽא־יָסַ֥ף (כתיב יָוסַ֥ף) ע֖וֹד לְבַקְשֽׁוֹ: |
| 5And David said to Achish, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, let them give me a place in one of the country towns, and I shall dwell there, for why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?" |

הוַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֜ד אֶל־אָכִ֗ישׁ אִם־נָא֩ מָצָ֨אתִי חֵ֚ן בְּעֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ יִתְּנוּ־לִ֣י מָק֗וֹם בְּאַחַ֛ת עָרֵ֥י הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה וְאֵ֣שְׁבָה שָּׁ֑ם וְלָ֨מָּה יֵשֵׁ֧ב עַבְדְּךָ֛ בְּעִ֥יר הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה עִמָּֽךְ: |
| for why should your servant dwell, etc.: and be a burden to you? |

| 6And Achish gave him Ziklag on that day; therefore, Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah until this day. |

ווַיִּתֶּן־ל֥וֹ אָכִ֛ישׁ בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא אֶת־צִֽקְלָ֑ג לָכֵ֞ן הָיְתָ֚ה צִֽקְלַג֙ לְמַלְכֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה: |
| 7And the number of days which David dwelt in the field of the Philistines was (some) days and four months. |

זוַֽיְהִי֙ מִסְפַּ֣ר הַיָּמִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־יָשַׁ֥ב דָּוִ֖ד בִּשְׂדֵ֣ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים יָמִ֖ים וְאַרְבָּעָ֥ה חֳדָשִֽׁים: |
| (some) days and four months: The minimum of days, being two. It is impossible to explain this word, ‘yomim,’ as ‘a year,’ since David did not go to Achish until Samuel had died, and Saul reigned only four months after Samuel’s demise, as we learned in S.O. (ch. 13). (This can) also (be determined) from the number of Eli’s years (i.e., the forty years which he judged Israel, supra 4:18), and the twenty years that the Ark was in Kiriath-jearim (supra 7:2), totaling sixty years. Subtract therefrom Samuel’s fifty-two years, plus one year for his conception with these four months, plus the seven years which David reigned in Hebron (II Sam. 5:5) before he brought the Ark from Kiriath-jearim. It is found that Saul reigned after Samuel’s demise but four months. |

מיעוט ימים שנים, ואי אפשר לפרש ימים זה שנה, שהרי לא הלך דוד אצל אכיש עד שמת שמואל, ושאול לא מלך אחר מיתת שמואל אלא ארבעה חדשים, כמו ששנינו בסדר עולם וגם ממנין שנותיו של עלי, ועשרים שנה שהיה הארון בקרית יערים, הרי ששים שנה, צא מהם חמשים ושתים של שמואל, ושנה אחת לעיבורו עם ארבעה חדשים הללו, ושבע שנים שמלך דוד בחברון קודם שהביא את הארון מקרית יערים, נמצא שלא מלך שאול אחר מיתת שמואל, יותר מארבעה חדשים:

| 8And David and his men would go up and raid the Geshurites and the Gizrites and the Amalekites, for those (tribes) were the inhabitants of the land, who were of old, as you go to Shur, even to the land of Egypt. |

חוַיַּ֚עַל דָּוִד֙ וַֽאֲנָשָׁ֔יו וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֛וּ אֶל־הַגְּשׁוּרִ֥י וְהַגִּזְרִ֖י (כתיב וְהַגִּרְזִ֖י) וְהָעֲמָלֵקִ֑י כִּ֣י הֵ֜נָּה יֹשְׁב֚וֹת הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מֵֽעוֹלָ֔ם בּוֹאֲךָ֥ שׁ֖וּרָה וְעַד־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם: |
| And David… would go up: This is a present tense. He was always accustomed to this. |

| 9And David would smite (the inhabitants of) the land, and leave neither man nor woman alive; and he would take sheep and cattle, and donkeys and camels and clothing, and return and come to Achish. |

טוְהִכָּ֚ה דָוִד֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ וְלֹ֥א יְחַיֶּ֖ה אִ֣ישׁ וְאִשָּׁ֑ה וְלָקַח֩ צֹ֨אן וּבָקָ֜ר וַחֲמֹרִ֚ים וּגְמַלִּים֙ וּבְגָדִ֔ים וַיָּ֖שָׁב וַיָּבֹ֥א אֶל־אָכִֽישׁ: |
| 10And Achish would say, "Where did you raid today?" And David would say, "Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites and against the south of the Kenites." |

| Where did you raid?: (Heb. אל פשטתם) The ‘lamed’ is substituted for a ‘nun’ (making the word אן, where) like: And he made for himself a chamber (נשכה) in the book of Ezra (Neh. 13:7) like לשכה. |

| 11And David would leave alive neither man nor woman to bring to Gath, saying, "Lest they tell about us, saying, 'So has David done, and so is his manner all the days which he has dwelt in the field of the Philistines.' " |

| 12And Achish believed David, saying, "He has greatly abhorred his people Israel, and he will be to me a bondsman forever." |
